  Janie Hobart
Akaitcho Representative
Term expires at AGM 2010

Janie moved to the North in 1981, living in Tuktoyaktuk and settling in Fort Smith where she plans to retire. She has two sons: John, a Corporal in Signal Corps of the Canadian Armed Forces and Thomas, who is a Journeyman Electrician at Diavik Diamond Mine. Janie has worked as a High School Teacher, a Detachment Clerk with the R.C.M.P., been a Recreation Director for the Town of Fort Smith for 5 years as well as managed the Fort Smith Swimming Pool part time since 1985. She is an active sport and recreation volunteer; some of the boards she has sat on include the NWTRPA Aquatics Committee, Sport North, Mackenzie Recreation Association, Fort Smith Gardeners, she has also been involved in organizing committees of many community events - swim meets, territorial curling championships, NWT Winter Games to name a few.

  Taig Connell
Beaufort Delta Representative

Taig has lived in the North for over 30 years. He has worked mainly in the volunteer sector in the areas of Tourism, Youth initiatives and Community Development. Taig is currently an Adult Educator with Aurora College in Fort McPherson, a position he has held for the past 10 years. He has also worked several years as an Economic Development Officer. Taig enjoys playing guitar and jamming with his band, long walks with his dog and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
 
 

 
 
  Lois Philipp
Dehcho Representative

Lois has lived all her life in the North. She was raised in the community of Fort Providence, where currently she is the principal at Deh Gáh Elementary & Secondary School. Lois has been involved in teaching in the community since 1996. She has been involved as a member of the NWT Ski Association executive for a number of years, acted as part of the Mission Staff for the Kenai and Yellowknife Arctic Winter Games, the Canada Winter Games held in Whitehorse and the Selkirk Western Canada 'B' Games and as part of the Executive Board of Northern Youth Abroad. Lois enjoys hiking, biking and water sports; she has paddled the Nahanni, kayaked in the Queen Charlotte Islands and hiked in places like the West Coast Trail.
 
 

 
 
  Gary Hoffman

Gary has lived over 38 years in the North, in the communities of Yellowknife and Hay River, where he currently resides. He and his wife Carol have two boys, Trevor and Brett. Gary is retired from the Government of the Northwest Territories where he worked with the Department of Transportation for 30 years, after retiring he accepted the position as Superintendant for the Hay River Golf Course Grounds. Gary is an active sport volunteer in the NWT, he has held Executive positions with NWT Softball and NWT Curling and is currently a member of NWT Bowling. In addition to being actively involved in a number of NWT volunteer boards, Gary has been a member of the NWT Elks Service Club for 38 years and overseen the off air television broadcast system for Hay River for the past 28 years. Gary is involved in curling competitively, and enjoys golfing, bowling, and playing softball. During the winter months, Gary participates in traveling throughout NWT Curling Clubs in a volunteer capacity to assist youth and adults with their skill level and help with high-performance training.

  Ella Mawdsley
Yellowknife Representative

Ella was born in Fort Simpson, NT and raised in Fort Smith, NT. She has recently graduated from the University of Lethbridge where she recieved a Degree in Business Management with a focus on marketing. Ella is currently living in Yellowknife where she works as a Public Affairs Assistant for the Legislative Assembly with the Government of Northwest Territories. In addition to participating in the sports of volleyball, figure skating, track & field and soccer; Ella has competed in the 2007 Queen City Marathon, 2005 World University Games (as part of Team Canada Biathlon), 2004 Arctic Winter Games (Snowshoe Biathlon) and the 2003 Canada Games (Ski Biathlon). She enjoys skiing, swimming, running and is a certified personal trainer, teaching fitness classes at the Yellowknife Racquet Club.
 
 

 
 
  Abe Theil
Yellowknife Representative

Abe has lived in Yellowknife since 1969, leaving for a brief 2 year period to live in Inuvik. Abe and his wife Linda currently live in Yellowknife, where their two children, Ryan and Kimberly were born. Abe has been a very active sport administrator in the NWT, performing as Sport North Federation’s President since 1999. He has also served as a Sport North Federation Board Member, and Chairman for the Federation’s Finance, Games, and Leadership committees. In addition to being strongly involved in coaching volleyball he has represented the NWT in Volleyball at the 1971 Canada Games and has participated as an athlete in 9 Arctic Winter Games. Abe holds a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Recreation from the University of Alberta and is a member of the Certified General Accountants Associations of Canada & NWT. In his spare time Abe enjoys playing volleyball, golfing and relaxing at his cabin.

  Brian Kelln
Recreation Representative

Brian moved to Yellowknife in 1989 from Saskatchewan. He has four children with his wife of 30 years. Brian volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Division, Canadian Lifesaving Society, and has coached water polo, softball, curling, springboard diving and snorkelling programs. Some of the boards he has served on include: NWT Curling Association, NWT Recreation and Parks Association, Yellowknife Curling Club, and the Saskatchewan and Alberta Lifesaving Associations. Brian is the current Program Manager with the City of Yellowknife. Some of Brian’s interests include yard work, golfing, curling, cycling, swimming, and carpentry.
 
 

 
 
  Alfred Moses
Recreation Representative

Alfred has lived his whole life In the North. He currently resides in Yellowknife and his home community is Inuvik, where his family still lives. Alfred is the current Occupation Health Technician/Recreation Programmer at the Diavik Diamond Mine. In the past he has worked with the Department of Health & Social Services as the NWT Tobacco Coordinator, the Inuvik Regional Health Authority as a Community Health Representative, as a Youth Center Supervisor, Inuvik Town Councillor, and Physical Education Teacher. He has volunteered with such organizations the NWT Recreation and Parks Association and the Terry Fox Run. Alfred enjoys running, hiking, biking and participating in active team sports.

  Bridget Larocque
Sport Representative

Bridget was born in Inuvik.  Both of her parents are from the Mackenzie Delta, her mother was born in Aklavik and her father was born up the Peel River. She has 17 siblings and a large extended family. Her two sons, Kyle and Russell
currently make their home in Yellowknife.  She has lived in various communities across the North — Inuvik, Fort Smith, Norman Wells, Fort Resolution, Hay River and Yellowknife. Bridget has a diverse range of work experience: educated and has worked in the Social Work field for 17 years, as Director & Chairperson for the NWT Métis Development Corporation, in the Finance & Administration field with the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board and in the travel industry. Currently Bridget is the Executive Director for the Gwich’in Council International. She has volunteered countless hours with sports teams and numerous non-profit organizations. Bridget is a competitive curler and enjoys hiking, traditional activities, listening to music, and doing cross-word puzzles; she is an avid reader and particularly enjoys reading about politics, environmental issues & professional and personal development. Bridget’s sporting accomplishments include competing at the Canada Winter Games (Volleyball), the North American Indigenous Games (Fastball), the Western “B” Fastball Championships and as part of winning team for the 2001 National Aboriginal Curling Championships.
 
 

 
 
  Billie Lennie
Sport Representative

Billie was born in community of Aklavik and has also lived in Yellowknife, Edmonton, Morinville, Rochester, NY, and Lethbridge. Currently Billie resides in Inuvik, which she has called home for the past 21 years.  She and her husband of 19 years have 3 children. Billie, an active volunteer has enjoyed participating in the Muskrat Jamboree, the Northern Games Society, on the Arctic Sport Board, and with the Inuvik Drummers & Dancers and the Inuvik Curling Club-Junior Curlers. She also enjoys traditional activities, curling, sewing, fishing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, drum dancing, reading, and spending time in her bush camp.

 
 

 
 
  Kim Elder Poulter
Sport Alternate

Kim is a long time Yellowknifer, living in the city since 1977. She and her husband John have two sons, Brad and Max, who are both born and raised in the North. Currently, she is the Promotions & Sales Coordinator for the Western Region of First Air. This position has enabled Kim to travel and make friends in communities spanning across the North. Kim is an active volunteer; she has been strongly involved with the Special Olympics NWT as a past President and volunteer in numerous capacities, including acting as a representative for the Special Olympics, Nationally and Territorially. She currently is the President elect for the Rotary Club, and sits on the panel for the Kidsport program. Above all, Kim is a strong advocate in message of “inclusion for all”.
